The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is designed to evaluate the English proficiency of people whose native language is not English.

Why take the TOEFL test?

The TOEFL test opens more doors than any other academic English tests. Most people take the TOEFL test as a prerequisite for admission to colleges and universities where English is used or required.

In addition, many government, licensing, and certification agencies and exchange and scholarship programs use TOEFL scores to evaluate the English proficiency of people for whom English is not their native language.

More than 6,000 institutions and agencies in 110 countries rely on TOEFL scores to select students with the English skills needed to succeed.

Who should take the TOEFL test?

Nonnative English speakers at the 11th-grade level or above should take the TOEFL test to provide evidence of their English proficiency before beginning their academic work. The test content is considered too difficult for students below 11th grade.

Many institutions report that they frequently do not require TOEFL test scores of certain kinds of international applicants. These include:

Nonnative speakers who hold degrees or diplomas from postsecondary institutions in English-speaking countries (e.g., the United States, Canada, England, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand).
Nonnative speakers who have successfully completed at least a two-year course of study in which English was the language of instruction

IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an English test for foreign language users which tests the test takers’ proficiency in the four areas of English language: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking with a band score of 1 to 9 for each individual section.

There are two kinds of IELTS Preparation Courses: The Academic Training Module and The General Training. The Academic Training is for the candidates who wish to pursue their higher education overseas whereas the General Training is for immigration and training requirements abroad.

Where is IELTS recognized?

IELTS is accepted by most British, Australian, Canadian and New Zealand’s academic institutions. In the United States it is increasingly gaining recognition as an option to TOEFL.

What type of IELTS should you take?

You can take either the Academic or General Training modules. The Academic Reading and Writing is appropriate for you if you are planning to undertake academic study in a higher education institution. If you are planning to undertake non-academic training or applying for immigration to Australia, Canada or New Zealand, you should take the General Training modules.

When and where will the test be?

IELTS tests are offered at British Council centers in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan and other parts of the country.

The Speaking module may take place within a week before or after the test of other modules.

SAT

The SAT is an entry and scholarship criterion into most of the best and highly-ranked schools in the United States. It is a test of Mathematical and Verbal reasoning. High scores on the SAT qualify students to gain entry into the best schools and to compete for merit -based scholarships. The SAT is scored on a scale of 200-800 (for math, reading and writing) amounting to a maximum total score of 2400. The SAT is typically taken by high school juniors and seniors in the United States and is offered several times a year. One component of the test is an essay, which is graded by two examiners and is scored on a scale of 1-6 (low to high).

GMAT

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is used by many graduate schools of business and management as a criterion in considering application for admission to the school’s graduate programs.

The GMAT measures verbal, mathematical, and analytical writing skills of students. The GMAT is a four-hour computer-adaptive test. Your performance on previous questions determines which question you’ll be asked next. Questions that appear early in the exam impact your score more than those appearing at the end of the exam.

GRE

The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is a computer adaptive test. It is used as a determining factor for admissions to general graduate-level degree programs in the United States. The test assesses the verbal, math, and analytical skills of applicants for graduate schools.

Analytical Writing

The Analytical Writing Section has two essays. One asks students to “present their perspective on an issue,” the other asks them to “analyze an argument.”

Quantitative Section

The Quantitative Section tests high-school level math. The students will be required to be familiar with arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis.
